From the dawn of human history, mankind has been searching for means and technologies to improve its quality of life. But it was the period of enlightenment and the discovery of the scientific method that spurred quantum leaps in progress in all kinds of knowledge and its applications. On the back of these successes, it became prevalent to believe that science and technologies holds the answers to all human problems, the potential to transcend human limitations and the key to create a perfect and sustainable world – often diminishing externalities and ethical issues as necessary or temporary costs of human progress.
